At the rear of the column was a Massachusetts regiment, some New Hampshire militia, and camp followers. As the redcoats near the ambush point, Magua abruptly turns around and walks quickly to the rear of the marching column. On June 7, 1756 General Daniel Webb arrived to assume command of the fort and lead the upcoming planned offensive. Sacrement by the French, the place was renamed Lake George by William Johnson in 1755, shortly before he had defeated a French force there in the Battle of Lake George, to leave no doubt as to English sovereignty in the area. Magua and his flunkies move on, but soon the good guys catch up with them, this time from the rear. Michael Mann's direction has rarely been better. That afternoon, as the defeated English marched away, the disappointed Indians held a war council.
The Munro girls are there too, but they mostly just stand off to the side looking scared. Only a maximum of 500 could man the fort. Soon they are joined by David Gamut, a singing master and religious follower of Calvinism. A chase and a battle ensue. A few days later, the English forces call for a truce. After Hawkeye releases Gamut, they argue about the efficacy of prayer-song. And so it was to be.
He had converted a militia company of New Hampshire woodsmen into an band of guerrilla fighters. They pass a pond, and Hawkeye tells the group it is filled with corpses of slain French soldiers. Wounded in the previous battle, he now passed the command of the fort to Lieutenant Colonel George Munro and left him with a garrison of two thousand troops, half red-coat British regulars, half blue-coat colonials. Commandant Sir William Johnson had just renamed the lake after the English king, thus claiming all of it for the crown. Magua begins yelling the frenzied Indian war whoop, and the Indians attack the English, slaughtering them and drinking their blood.
When she pulls the shawl away from him, he seizes her baby and smashes it against the rocks. The movie repeatedly makes Heyward out to be an overly fussy and foolish dweeb, which pays off at the end in a shockingly poignant way. Monro, speaking of his regular troops, gave 129 killed and wounded - including the siege - as his estimates. As the English and French soldiers battle for control of the North American colonies in the 18th century, the settlers and native Americans are forced to take sides. Uncas begins to attack the Huron who killed Cora, but Magua stabs Uncas in the back. He cuts his way through several Huron warriors using a combination of guns and brute force.
Montcalm requests a meeting with Munro, but Munro sends Heyward in his place. As they enter the fort, Colonel Munro weeps and embraces his daughters. He accuses Heyward of racism for preferring Alice to Cora. Heyward is the only one who manages to hold his own. The English responded, perhaps too soon, with their own limited artillery.
It soon became apparent that Fort William Henry was becoming a thorn in the side of New France. Currently all was quiet on this front as the English put the last touches on new Fort William Henry. Montcalm chose the northwest bastion to bear the brunt of the artillery barrage he planned. Played by the great Wes Studi. All this, however, was an utterly insulting blow to the French who for over a hundred years had considered the lake irrevocably theirs, calling it by their own name, Lac du Saint Sacrement. The British evacuated the fort, leaving about 70 sick and wounded to the care of the French. Cora and Uncas receive proper burials the next morning amid ritual chants performed by the Delawares. The remainder settled into an entrenched camp just east of the fort. For the moment, however, these two bastions confronted each other inertly, even if defiantly, thirty three miles of disputed water apart. Fearing that he too was about to be attacked, he claimed that all his troops were needed to defend his own fort. At some point, the French did help restore some semblance of order.
Note this is not a musket as previously indicated; as a commenter points out, while most of the other soldiers and militias use various types of muskets, a marksman like Hawkeye favors the Pennsylvania Flintlock. The Indians next fell upon them. There are also beautiful shots of the group being led into the sunset and Hawkeye kept running. With victory assured, Chingachgook gives Magua an odd look: not vengeful or satisfied, just disgusted. The memorial site spurs Hawkeye to describe the Mohicans as the last of their tribe. The British troops enlist the help of local colonial militia men, who are reluctant to leave their homes undefended. ~~~~~~~ Lake George was wilderness.

After much argument among the villagers as to whether Fort Massachusetts was sufficient to protect the community, another was built some four miles to the west called Fort Hoosac consisting mostly of a log blockhouse where now stands Williams Inn at the crossroads of routes 2 and 7. Munro reveals that Cora and Alice have different mothers. General Marquis de Montcalm, in command at Fort Carillon, decided to invest and reduce the log structure at the south end of the Lake.
